After a whirlwind 2021 expanding The Comic Signal, we’d like to invite you to help us celebrate our additional space and our store’s 6th anniversary on February 26, 2022!
During our daylong event, you’ll be able to meet-and-greet some incredible MI-based creators, like Corinne Roberts (artist), Andy Budnick (artist), Peter Welmerink (author), Nate Eidenberger (artist), and representatives from Source Point Press during our Artist Alley from 11 AM-3 PM. Plus, I’ve commissioned a special Comic Signal-exclusive variant cover of Source Point Press’ Buzzard & Bone #1 by Kit Wallis that’ll be available to purchase.
And what’s a celebration without some sales? During the event, you can enjoy 50% off $3 comic books and 25% off comic sets.

In recognition of the artistic talent stemming from within our state, 20 for 20: Celebrating Michigan Illustrators is a curated view of children’s illustrators from across the mitten. We are thrilled to exhibit the work of both nationally recognized household names in children’s literature alongside emerging illustrators from the state. The exhibition is a collaged experience, celebrating the differences within the illustrative process that exemplifies the various ways artists come to create a piece, and challenges the viewer to adjust their definition of what it means to be an illustrator. From paintings, drawings, and collages, to pieces that are entirely digitally rendered, this exhibition celebrates the diversity found amongst illustrators here in Michigan and sets a precedent for beyond.
Join us at The Comic Signal on Friday, July 13, at 2 p.m. when our friend and local artist Corinne Roberts will host our next free art workshop to teach your kids how to draw monsters, dragons and other crazy creatures!
Corinne has written and illustrated multiple books, including “Trip to Trekka: A Travel Guide to a Vast Weird and Sometimes Dangerous Land” and “Imaginary Sea 1,2,3!” as well as the web comic/comic book “Out and About.” Along with her books, she illustrated the web-comic “Kitty Game” and the card game, Unreal Estate (which is available to purchase in our store!). You can learn more about Corinne’s work by visiting www.corinneroberts.net
Please note that this class is designed for ages 6 and up, and parents are asked to please plan to stay in the store with their children during the event.
Gene Ha is an Eisner Award winning artist who has collaborated with the perennial Allen Moore to create Top 10 and Top 10: The Forty-Niners. We dive into his creator owned comic, Mae. Plus, we talk about Top 10, comics that have had an impact on him, his admiration for history, anime, manga, and we talk about a wonderful water color artist too. This interview was recorded at two separate times to capture all that I wanted to ask about his new comic Mae. Enjoy this interview with one of the nicest people I had the pleasure of interviewing.
May 5th, marked my first time experiencing Free Comic Book Day. For those who are unaware, Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) is held on the first Saturday of May each year. It is a promotion to get people out of their houses and into the comic book shops. Since I love art and reading, what better way to experience both at the same time than in a comic book? In the past, FCBD fell on a day when I was either at work or at an event. Thankfully, I had the opportunity to go out to a few local comic shops to check out this national geek holiday this year. Read on to see what my experience was like.
These Year in Reviews are not, what I call, official “reviews”. Like last year, they will be a series of musings, learned lessons and stories of what I experienced through out the year. Of course, reviews are featured but they are blended in with everything. The theme of FIRSTS sum up the beginning, middle and end of my year, as you will see. Enjoy my year of 2016 in the Michigan Geek Scene.
When May arrives, winter is nothing but an afterthought. No snow or ice in sight. The cold weather is gone (for the most part since it is Michigan after all.) Con season is in it’s stride. What events did the fifth month of the year bring me? Let’s find out.
