MI Mix Tape 2025 Track 15 (Joe Boyd Vigil)

Music is AWESOME!!!!!! Geek music is even better. Since music is one of the driving forces in my life, I’m making you a mixtape.

April Mix Tape Theme: Electronic Music

This week’s track is from Joe Boyd Vigil. It is about a promise that was broken.

Artist: Joe Boyd Vigil
Song: Broken Promise
Album: Toonami: Deep Space Bass
Genre: Electronic

Toonami: Deep Space Bass was the official soundtrack for the Toonami block of programming on Cartoon Network. It’s crazy to think that the album is almost 25 years old as of this writing. This album was one of the first electronic/EDM albums that I sought out. I could be wrong, but it seems like this album marked the first time an EDM soundtrack was created for a block of cartoon programming on U.S. broadcasting. Original electronic music and audio from the anime/cartoon series were blended together for the bumpers before and after the broadcast episodes. The music from Joe Boyd Vigil certainly had an impact on a whole generation of late 90s/early 2000s anime fans.

My favorite track is “Broken Promise.” The ethereal melody, along with the drum and bass, creates a chill vibe. Toonami’s animated music video called “Broken Promises (Dreams)” was my introduction to that song. The footage from Outlaw Star, Tenchi Muyo, Dragonball Z, and Gundam Wing with the audio narration from Outlaw Star told a story of creating your destiny. Shout out to Beau Billingslea for voicing the narrator. Check this track out.

Massive shout out to Devon Camel for the Fresh artwork
