March Mix Tape Theme: Michigan Nerdcore/Nerdcore Adjacent Artists
This week’s track is from Noveliss.
Artist: Noveliss
Song: Tales of a Samurai Part IV
Album: Cyberpunk Rhapsody
Genre: Hip-Hop
Rounding out this month’s theme of nerdcore/nerdcore-adjacent rappers based out of Michigan, our last tour stop is in Detroit to talk about Noveliss. Noveliss is a rapper, martial artist, podcaster, pro wrestling fan, and actor. His songs are lyrically dense and require multiple listens to catch everything. Noveliss doesn’t throw in nerdy references just for the sake of it. He creates songs that make you think. “Liquid Snake” and “Fear of a Black Mermaid” are two prime examples. Honestly, I feel that he is underrated. Plus, he deserves a shout-out for making a Toonami tribute album.
“Tales Of A Samurai Part IV” is the latest addition to Noveliss’ series of songs with that title. Each installment would focus on three different anime characters who were skilled in the ways of the sword. Part IV changes the formula by shining the spotlight on Noveliss, Guts, and Ahsoka Tano. Since Noveliss practices with a jian, which is a sword used in Chinese martial arts, I can see his logical inclusion in the series. My interpretation of the section about himself is that it is about his life experiences and philosophical approaches to living. The second section is about the tragedy-filled life of the Dragonslayer wielder, Guts, from the Berserk series. The final section of the song is about the double lightsaber-carrying Jedi outcast, Ahsoka Tano. On the production side, I enjoy how Hir-O blends the Chinese erhu with beats and synth. This track was a solid way to wrap up this month’s theme of talented rappers from Michigan.
