January Mix Tape Theme: MAGFest Memories
This week’s track is from the iconic Cynthia Harrell.
Artist: Cynthia Harrell
Song: Snake Eater
Genre: Orchestral Ballad
Rounding out this month’s theme of MAGFest Memories, I’d like to visit 2024 where I had the pleasure of seeing Cynthia Harrell perform. When I found out that Cynthia Harrell was going to be at MAGFest, I was excited. When I found out that she was going to perform with the MAGFest Community Orchestra, I knew that I had to be there no matter what. For those who have no idea what I’m talking about, Cynthia was the original vocalist for the song Snake Eater, from the excellent PS2 game Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. Snake Eater is the type of song that pops into your head when you are climbing a ridiculously long ladder.
Anyone that knows me, knows that I am at concerts, from early in the morning to well after midnight while I’m at MAGFest. Friday going into Saturday was no different. I went to bed around 2:15am on Saturday, got up at 8am, and I was back at the Gaylord by 9:30am to catch the MAGFest Community Orchestra. I told myself that I would sleep when I’m dead because there was no way that I was going to miss that moment. I managed to secure a spot behind the orchestra, off to the side. To be honest, the whole hour of music from the orchestra was worth getting up early for. Snake Eater was the last song in the set. Listening to Cynthia perform was a treat. A treat that gave me goosebumps because I was present for a special moment in time. Moments like this play a huge part in why MAGFest is so special to me. Looking forward to many more.
I love that MAGFest truly emphasizes the music part of the event. I appreciate that they bring in the original composers and vocalists, from video games, as guests. They are not treated as an autograph/meet and greet afterthought. Besides being in panels, some of the composers and vocalists perform at MAGFest. It’s cool to see the MAGFest attendees show them love and give these folks the flowers that they truly deserve.
