January Mix Tape Theme: MAGFest Memories

Continuing with the theme of MAGFest Memories, I’d like to visit 2023, where I got to experience the wonderful 8-Bit Big Band in person. 2023 marked the 20th anniversary of MAGFest and they pulled out all stops to create a special event, overall. The Grammy Award winning 8-Bit Band was one of the headlining acts. I’ll be the first to admit that I wasn’t able to catch their whole concert from the beginning due to showing support for Pokerus Project’s concert in the Jamspace. After his excellent set, I was able to catch the majority of the 8-Bit Big Band’s concert. Upon arriving, I was blown away by how packed the Mainstage room was with attendees. From that moment on, I experienced a wonderful jazz concert.

Honestly, the whole concert could’ve counted as a MAGFest Memory for 2023.It was hard to narrow down to a single song. However, their cover of “Dire, Dire Docks”, from Super Mario 64 resonated with me. Bassist Adam Neely was the centerpiece for this song, coming and going with solos throughout the song. I enjoyed how the rest of the band started off in the background and slowly came to the forefront musically. The whole song is magical. Check it out. Shout out to the band leader, Charlie Rosen, for that amazing experience.
