January Mix Tape Theme: MAGFest Memories
This week’s track is from the VGM Collective.
Artist: VGM Collective
Song: Heart of Icegrave
Genre: Jazz
Continuing with the theme of MAGFest Memories, I’d like to visit 2020 where I heard this wonderful cover by the VGM Collective. I remember exactly where I was. I was hanging out with my friend Steve, in the Belvedere Lobby Bar. The bar was packed with people and I couldn’t actually see the VGM Collective performing jazz in the background, from where I was sitting. I was mid conversation and the opening notes of their cover of “Heart of Icegrave” stunned me into silence and gave me goosebumps. I got real quiet to focus on the song. To be honest, I had never heard the song before or played the game that it was from, Monster World IV. This song clicked with me on so many levels. It had a killer sax solo by Insaneintherainmusic which was followed up by a stellar keyboard solo by Button Masher. It was so good. Their song is one of my favorite MAGFest experiences EVER.
I didn’t catch the name of the song because the background noise was so loud while the band leader, Max Boiko, was talking. I was obsessed for weeks about hearing this song, again. Insaneintherainmusic and Max were kind enough to respond to my inquiries about the song, after MAGFest. Once MAGFest uploaded their whole concert to Youtube, I was able to re-experience this magical moment all over again.
Shoutout to all the band members who created this wonderful experience for me.
Max Boiko
Carlos aka Insaneintherainmusic
Jake aka Button Masher
Dom Palombi
Person whose name that I did not catch at all. I think it might be Cole but don’t quote me on that.
