Music is AWESOME!!!!!! Geek music is even better. Since music is one of the driving forces in my life, I’m making you a mixtape.
April Mix Tape Theme: Electronic Music
This week’s track is from Ian O’Brien. It is a nice remix of a Cowboy Bebop song.
Artist: Ian O’Brien
Song: Piano Black (Ian O’Brien Remix)
Album: Cowboy Bebop Remixes: Music for Freelance
Genre: Electronic
Cowboy Bebop is one of my favorite anime series of all time. Hands down. It is THE series that I recommend to people who are interested in checking out anime, and they don’t know where to start. I own two copies of the series on DVD and Blu-ray. I own the movie Knockin on Heaven’s Door. I own all 5 volumes of the manga side stories. I own a few Bebop shirts. I own a wall scroll of the crew of the Bebop. Hell, I interviewed Steve Blum (Spike Spiegel) TWICE. Super proud of those interviews, if I’m being honest. To say Cowboy Bebop holds a special place in my heart would be an understatement.
The soundtrack is what I adore the most about that series. Yoko Kanno and the Seatbelts created one of the best anime soundtracks of all time. There is a treasure trove of original music spanning multiple genres. Music is an integral element of the series. If I hear a song, I can usually pinpoint the scene in which it was featured. I proudly own all 11 studio releases (including the box set).
Out of all the releases, one is not like the others. That album is called “Cowboy Bebop Remixes: Music for Freelance.” Select songs were remixed to the point of evoking completely different “vibes,” as the cool kids say, from their original versions. The whole album is designed to be a pirate radio station set in the universe of Cowboy Bebop. Which brings me to this week’s track. “Piano Black” is a unique jazz song in and of itself because it mixes piano, sax, bass, drums, and rhythmic train tracks like percussive loop. It has a high energy and driving-forward feeling. This song plays during the scene where Faye Valentine escapes from a casino in the “Honky Tonk Women” episode. UK-based musician and producer Ian O’Brien completely changed the dynamic of the original song. He lifted the sax lines from the original and placed them in a world of airy and chill audio textures in his remix. It is one of my favorite tracks off of the album. Check it out.
