HERO NATION – YPSILANTI

WHAT IS HERO NATION – YPSILANTI?

Long before they appeared on the big screen, superheroes have been at the forefront of pop culture. Their intrinsic association to human aspiration, ingenuity, and strength has inspired us to connect with the hero within ourselves. Through colorfully splashed comic panels, they’ve shown us that although not every battle ends in victory, a hero’s tenacity ensures an eventual win. However, not unlike much of American history, superheroes have fallen victim to the perpetual erasure of multiculturalism, people of color, the LBGTQ community, women, people with disabilities and other marginalized groups. But the lack of intersectionality throughout the history of the genre has inspired numerous progressive movements among fans, where the primary goal is to redefine the genre in a way that’s universally inclusive. Hero Nation seeks to contribute to this cause on a broader scale. It also focuses on the individual experience, ensuring that everyone feels empowered by celebrating the hero within themselves. Not only will Hero Nation provide a platform for diverse artist, writers and creators, while offering a safe space for thought-provoking panel discussions about superheroes inside Ypsilanti’s Parkridge Community Center, it will also have outside festivities; all in celebration of superheroes and diversity. So grab your capes, leather suits, lassos of truth, tights, armor, swords and shields, and join the Hero Nation on September 9th. It’s time to save the world!

2016 Year in Review Winter Edition

These Year in Reviews are not, what I call, official “reviews”. Like last year, they will be a series of musings, learned lessons and stories of what I experienced through out the year. Of course, reviews are featured but they are blended in with everything. The theme of FIRSTS sum up the beginning, middle and end of my year, as you will see. Enjoy my year of 2016 in the Michigan Geek Scene.

Winter is the one season that ends one year and begins another. 2016 marked a new journey into the land of Michigan. Sure, it was cold but I couldn’t wait to get on the road and experience everything. Thankfully, it was only cold on the outside. Find out what awaited me during the chilly months of January and February.

January Sunday Steampunk Diversion 2017!

Come join us on January 15, 2017 from 3 to 7pm at Arbor Brewing Company Microbrewery . Enjoy good food and drink with great people!

So, roughly about 6 years ago (yes, it’s been that long!), a group of likeminded steampunk individuals started quasi monthly gatherings in Ypsilanti. Over time, the organizers and locations have changed, but one thing that hasn’t is the great feeling of meeting up with good friends and enjoying an afternoon together.

And for those of you who may be wanting to dip your toes in the local steampunk community, this is a perfect first outing. No pressure, no hype, come and join us!

Please also remember that the service style at the brewery is pub style, so please remember to bus your table 🙂
