Penguicon 2018

Penguicon is a not-for-profit, community-run convention for open source software, science fiction, music, gaming, DIY, and more. Panel topics include technology, science, eco/green, literature, costuming, food, gaming (board and video), webcomics, action/adventure, music, film, anime and an after dark event. .This is a big hang out for ALL areas of the geek/nerd community. What better way to meet people who wave the geek/nerd flag? People come to Penguicon to learn about securing their network, and also how to make their own cheese. They learn how to create chiptunes on their gameboy, and come listen to sci-fi. There is also the Maker Market which is like a dealer room except they don’t accept commodities, only thing’s people have designed themselves. If you need a place to recharge, check out the con suite which has free soda and food all week long.
Penguicon is a convention tailored mainly for adults. While kids are welcome, there are no special passes or events for them. Please keep that in mind.

Ambercon 2018

Welcome to Ambercon! The next Ambercon – the 28th – will be from Thursday, March 22nd through Sunday, March 25th, 2018!

Though Amber Diceless Role-Playing has been old enough to drink for ten years now (it has been thirty-one years since Erick Wujcik first showed ADRP), it is still going strong.

But … Ambercon is a broad-spectrum diceless gaming and indie gaming convention! We’ve got superheroes, musketeers, characters from various fictional settings we won’t name here due to fear of lawsuits, SOE operatives, cowboys, and, of course, Amber-based games… you name it, we’ll game it!

However, those plans came crashing down when MMX was cancelled three days prior to the big day. I found out about the cancellation of MMX on Tuesday evening and the shock of the cancellation didn’t hit me until Wednesday morning. To say I was bummed out by the cancellation of Midwest Media Expo would be an understatement. Most people encounter post con depression. I had pre-con depression. I had done over 30 hours of research on the 6 guests I was hoping to interview. When I found out that the event was cancelled, I felt that all of my work, for what I hoped to be awesome interviews, was washed down the drain. While I resigned myself to joining fellow attendees in wallowing over the loss of MMX, an unexpected turn for the better occurred. On Wednesday, the staff of MMX announced that they were putting on a weekend event for the fans. Out of the ashes of Midwest Media Expo’s cancellation, a baby phoenix in the form of a free fan appreciation event called NotCon appeared.
