These Year in Reviews are not, what I call, official “reviews”. They are a series of musings, learned lessons and stories of what I experienced through out the year. Of course, reviews are featured but they are blended in with everything. It’s a director’s commentary of my adventures during the year of 2018 in the Michigan Geek Scene. Lansing’s annual anime convention, Shuto Con, descended upon the Lansing Center again. For the last three years, I had a good time experiencing this convention. How did my fourth visit to Shuto Con compare to last year?
I finally had the opportunity to do a proper interview with nerdcore rap duo, 2d6. Boy, did I regret it. If I wasn’t contractually obligated and held at gunpoint, I would’ve never released this. DJ Stuck Down a Mineshaft with a Broken Leg is a horrible reprobate while Cliff B is pretty cool. All kidding aside, I had a lot of fun talking with these two again. We dove into their albums, their hilarious music videos, their great song titles, video games, pro wrestling, and a Barenaked Ladies podcast. A lot of insults were thrown back and forth in this mad train wreck of an interview.
Final batch of photos from Shuto Con.

2016 marked the return of the Japanese Animation Film and Anime eXpo (aka JAFAX). JAFAX began in June of 1996 at Kendall College as a one day event. It grew to become a two day event for the next year at that location. From year 3 to 19, JAFAX resided at the beautiful campus of Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan. JAFAX 19 was the last year the event was held at GVSU. Unfortunately the event grew too big for the campus, since the attendance level was over 5000 people. JAFAX 20 signaled the transition from a free 2 day event to a 3 day ticketed event. DeVos Hall became the new home for the Grand Rapids anime and Japanese culture event.
Final batch of photos from JAFAX 2016. Saturday afternoon to closing time on Sunday are the name of the game of this album from the returning event.
